Switches & Outlets

OVERVIEW

Everyday Electrical Essentials Done Right

One of the first things you do when entering your home is to reach for the light switch to see where you’re going, and next, you might plug in your cellphone. As some of the most commonly used electrical components, switches and outlets wear out over time and eventually need replacement. New constructions, remodels, and even upgrades need to consider the increase in electricity that affects outlets and associated switches.

Steps to Check if an Outlet is Functional

Before calling an electrician, there are several steps we recommend for checking if an outlet is working.

  • Ensure all switches connected to the outlet are turned on.
  • Check the circuit breaker or fuse associated with that outlet to confirm it is intact. Outlets can often be tripped and may simply need to be reset in the circuit breaker.

Once you have completed these steps, you can then test the outlet.

  • Plug in a light and see if it illuminates. If the light does not turn on, it is likely that there is no power in the socket, and you should contact a professional for repairs.

Hidden Electrical Dangers

The Risks of Backstabbing in Outlet Installation

Backstabbing occurs when wires are merely pushed into the back of an outlet rather than being securely connected. Although there is no specific code prohibiting this type of installation, it can pose a significant fire hazard, especially with frequent use. This is very common in new builds, and newer renovation homes. Our technicians will check your outlets with a complimentary evaluation when at your home. To make sure that your outlets and switches are installed correctly.
